A committee comprised of representatives of the Urban League and community leaders will select the recipients based on scoring of set criteria as demonstrated by Chester A. Jone’s & Robert L. Bugg’s Sr. legacy of civic involvement and education. Mr. Chester Arthur Jones was a retired steelworker from Inland Steel. He was a native of Madison, Mississippi. His expertise was in the building trades for which he was very proficient. His love for his community was evident by the plumbing, carpentry, electrical work he performed for the indigent and senior citizens for free. He graduated from Madison Rosenwald High School and Utica Junior College. He died July of 2016. This scholarship is dedicated in his memory by his lifelong friend Robert L. Buggs Sr. Mr. Jones and Mr. Buggs were staunch activists in building relationships, community engagements, character, and promoting the general welfare for everyone. Although Mr. Jones’s passion for the building trades with his hands, he believed that a solid foundation of Love Thy Neighbor is the mortar that solidifies building a better society in his heart. May this scholarship serve as a catalyst for our young future builders of town, cities and nations.
